Life-threatening Adverse Drug Reaction
Park Hye-Kyung

Abstract
Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are frequent and a major public health problem. It can lead to either hospitalization, prolongation of stay or death. ADRs were further divided according to their degree of severity; a fatal ADRs contributed to death; a life-threatening ADRs required major therapeutic interventions such as mechanical ventilation, vasopressors and hemodialysis. Life-threatening ADRs were often preventable and could be avoided by the early identification of danger signs. With the development of information technology, adverse drug event surveillance system and critical laboratory alerting system would be helpful for the prevention of life-threatening ADRs. Pharmacogenomics may provide more information about possible risk for ADRs.
